Does anyone else remember making these in the 1970s? yup. me too.<p></p><p><br /></p><p>I checked out the <a href="https://www.loandbeholdstitchery.com/blogs/lo-and-behold/ombre-puff-quilt-free-video-tutorial">tutorial from Lo & Behold Stitchery</a> and started collecting fabrics in Ally's favorite shades of pink. Many months, including 2 weekend retreats later, the puff quilt was finished.<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhtZCIDcTZLPF2qav93dxizEvprvc2p98-IMlmyJPIYP70aoklamkaxkt2vobKpEglaVCNAioshAKEh_wFjvidJCx5MhYgw3taIw6yasCBe-ap4l9DwdEKUYCr1-XatMZvV-HObRaNsTF0fICe6wIQh1SN-oe-Di7F0WE3v0QYFJxLE7w2O8nAaW_8G6_Y/s2612/6DD73DAB-6EA0-4320-89AF-D9383793139D.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2612" data-original-width="2610" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhtZCIDcTZLPF2qav93dxizEvprvc2p98-IMlmyJPIYP70aoklamkaxkt2vobKpEglaVCNAioshAKEh_wFjvidJCx5MhYgw3taIw6yasCBe-ap4l9DwdEKUYCr1-XatMZvV-HObRaNsTF0fICe6wIQh1SN-oe-Di7F0WE3v0QYFJxLE7w2O8nAaW_8G6_Y/w400-h400/6DD73DAB-6EA0-4320-89AF-D9383793139D.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I must say, I found these instructions to be a bit tedious. You could choose a panel from the guild's community service stash or use one you already had...... and do something modern with it. I'm not a huge quilt panel person to be honest. So I grabbed this one from the community service fabric and set to work.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzxN6ibxQyrvLQfTQK9UdUzCKp5kAWlkICvzJpBduWiOHDbY-PCQ6JPN9yGVP1SgdYWZOSL0g3ojIDHActr9FMyLDTb_fOBPLSF0-E7yBg-1H6GF1qptM1zKWekubKzFwgcoOmWNj7TrPFqPwrscDN_58Z_7eBtLvwxQIUNLudyOnre5zgryQ1EaLVuwM1/s1588/4D29F27B-447D-440E-AA02-FD2830F55145.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="917" data-original-width="1588" height="231" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzxN6ibxQyrvLQfTQK9UdUzCKp5kAWlkICvzJpBduWiOHDbY-PCQ6JPN9yGVP1SgdYWZOSL0g3ojIDHActr9FMyLDTb_fOBPLSF0-E7yBg-1H6GF1qptM1zKWekubKzFwgcoOmWNj7TrPFqPwrscDN_58Z_7eBtLvwxQIUNLudyOnre5zgryQ1EaLVuwM1/w400-h231/4D29F27B-447D-440E-AA02-FD2830F55145.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>The panel is called The Dress, by Laura Heine. I looked at it for a long time and finally came up with a plan.</p><p>I sliced both pictures into 2 inch columns, identically. Turned one set upside down, then alternated the slices creating a funky reversible version of the original photo. Added some more of the panel as borders and some fabric from my stash, and this is where it landed...</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggJdhIdebJGr1gw4-5ApX0tkSuZRa9NDdGJslK2P9Es3WdUNdKQeIxcvdQC50rmxyr-75gwLqhQS_AOxtEQ_RUZwGTgo8YArVCLwWs0559Y_jHWmwxcL3l2KlY_hyAjA4Y7eu7chCcb7JiMHH8HOwgJBPq5cHqIy-TN6qFZ-5Atz418tWyvSw2s3Cshy1I/s4032/1A109B51-C019-4B9C-A802-755E4D5A1059.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggJdhIdebJGr1gw4-5ApX0tkSuZRa9NDdGJslK2P9Es3WdUNdKQeIxcvdQC50rmxyr-75gwLqhQS_AOxtEQ_RUZwGTgo8YArVCLwWs0559Y_jHWmwxcL3l2KlY_hyAjA4Y7eu7chCcb7JiMHH8HOwgJBPq5cHqIy-TN6qFZ-5Atz418tWyvSw2s3Cshy1I/w300-h400/1A109B51-C019-4B9C-A802-755E4D5A1059.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div><br /><p>once quilted and bound, this is the perfect size for either a wheelchair/lap quilt for the nursing home or a baby in the foster care program. I never shared my completed Improv Triangle Sewalong quilt.... although I did share some of my process <a href="http://ellynsplace.blogspot.com/2023/02/another-improv-triangle-sewalong.html">here</a>. Well it's finished! I used fabric I had painted with my gel plate and acrylic paints for the triangles and assorted teal, aqua and orange solids from my stash.</p><p>When it came time to quilt, I went a little bananas! It is all walking foot quilted on my domestic machine (a Janome 6600). I stitched giant triangles and then echo stitched them, using several shades of aqua thread. There are also some hand stitched triangles in there which are hard to see here. It was loads of fun!</p>Ellynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03191087933892721297noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-852987718968550838.post-22793767004822454962023-05-08T10:33:00.004-05:002023-05-08T17:29:08.364-05:00Pantone Quilt Challenge 2023<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">I love participating in the Pantone color of the year quilt challenge and have made a quilt just about every year since I learned about it! This year the color of the year is Viva Magenta. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/saroy/">Sarah</a> and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/elizabethkray/">Elizabeth</a> hosted a challenge and I am happy to share my finished quilt.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">My intention was to simply make a wonky square in a square quilt and call it good enough. ahhhh intentions! When I got this pieced together I knew it wasn't done. First of all my "wonky" blocks were not wonky enough! It looked like I had tried unsuccessfully to be precise. UGH!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyLiAubPNqzpPQ6AXKDSsKlNL_NDQy2pBXrZTLagU6g3s7iVUyUcZTBfYNrk5qPU8zcQbtjoLbVXE1oPBuJHC5pjQpa3E94_wd1yauQcj8IN4imFwvfKQA-UwI5JBt50Gmxl7Y1KPJsP5B7u_YREp-HBSBnyb0l_pYxxzxPRFNiapiNfps0Jh4ZzDiPg/s1284/48FC1C15-7657-4232-B492-F7C7DC71A249_1_201_a.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1215" data-original-width="1284" height="379" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyLiAubPNqzpPQ6AXKDSsKlNL_NDQy2pBXrZTLagU6g3s7iVUyUcZTBfYNrk5qPU8zcQbtjoLbVXE1oPBuJHC5pjQpa3E94_wd1yauQcj8IN4imFwvfKQA-UwI5JBt50Gmxl7Y1KPJsP5B7u_YREp-HBSBnyb0l_pYxxzxPRFNiapiNfps0Jh4ZzDiPg/w400-h379/48FC1C15-7657-4232-B492-F7C7DC71A249_1_201_a.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>My friends on retreat encouraged (ok, they were pretty forceful about it! HA!) me to cut it up. Why not? I fearlessly sliced it in 30 degree angle strips, scrambled them up and sewed together, but it wasn't enough. So I sliced again and inserted a new color to the mix! Although the crowd was chanting for lime green, I stuck with my trusty aqua and was happy with my choice. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh71F06uyLCn-ELMiu6Gwl14SqKhzfHgB6-0qOmgXCIdSLcdXxRfq7d_elXii_G22qmzHD2o9AwBJNqGpHfCbLnkRFcD_-u4WJAm6U62y7aTmoEsKPJIqQy-q6OnwoT7jQH7bFQCBBvHDafDftrf6UuwND-YDuAvqavLpn8bKZyOC2V-1B5fXp_mP8vpg/s1284/1FADA1ED-107B-499F-B072-1979B6BBC021_1_201_a.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1207" data-original-width="1284" height="376" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh71F06uyLCn-ELMiu6Gwl14SqKhzfHgB6-0qOmgXCIdSLcdXxRfq7d_elXii_G22qmzHD2o9AwBJNqGpHfCbLnkRFcD_-u4WJAm6U62y7aTmoEsKPJIqQy-q6OnwoT7jQH7bFQCBBvHDafDftrf6UuwND-YDuAvqavLpn8bKZyOC2V-1B5fXp_mP8vpg/w400-h376/1FADA1ED-107B-499F-B072-1979B6BBC021_1_201_a.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;">I cut these angled strips into rectangles which became square blocks, which eventually became a nine patch! That's because I JUST finished it this past week. Yikes! I chose a word before 2023 even started.... my word is Stretch! But I had no idea how to reflect it in a quilt.<p></p><p>When I was at Quiltcon in February, I took a design class, Inspired by Architecture, from <a href="https://davidowenhastings.com">David Owen Hastings</a>. Let me tell you, David's design process is soooooo different from mine! I learned so much from him and was determined to apply some of his design strategies to my own quilts. This was a stretch for me! So what better time to apply it than with my word of the year quilt?</p><p>First up was to take an architecture photo that spoke to me. I took this photo in downtown Atlanta during Quiltcon and thought it was the perfect inspiration...</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY5Uc5GmXEufnleKxsAGHGa76Xae6NQ2qYiFMmeE5f94nFZw99Lp-Jm1qonTNY_JFv-Yanag0lapASyo6nqxxBHJ60CB0kkq2WinTCF6h5tVn-NyLXycvIVL6RAF4W7EV7QNN_rSm4Ko9Z3l0kvcmob-esXUvuPkGAjA19JgRMTO1t1A1oZ-zA3wJ_dw/s2100/7B59DC15-2F28-42D3-BA2D-FCA0A379B176_1_201_a.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2100" data-original-width="2100" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY5Uc5GmXEufnleKxsAGHGa76Xae6NQ2qYiFMmeE5f94nFZw99Lp-Jm1qonTNY_JFv-Yanag0lapASyo6nqxxBHJ60CB0kkq2WinTCF6h5tVn-NyLXycvIVL6RAF4W7EV7QNN_rSm4Ko9Z3l0kvcmob-esXUvuPkGAjA19JgRMTO1t1A1oZ-zA3wJ_dw/w400-h400/7B59DC15-2F28-42D3-BA2D-FCA0A379B176_1_201_a.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>After printing my photo, cutting it up and drawing with colored pencils on graph paper, I came up with the improv piece used in my quilt.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIeljleO8iilch2NQgfVgIxbBw-641AyyiB_hg9mHlhNHBdD8WRIBllxuLOiZ7puH40XXOAP1KpsSGfTKHpW4bDqTi3RNEYIi8th98meItx89_T8YL4gyzyOCXbo9-cqLQahPUaiFAJeBrJmF3z4TXuKjRSqlko5F3guxhw6vyYcufS3Jhq01DDQ55PQ/s3024/8E3F344B-FBBE-46B6-855E-721BC826B652.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIeljleO8iilch2NQgfVgIxbBw-641AyyiB_hg9mHlhNHBdD8WRIBllxuLOiZ7puH40XXOAP1KpsSGfTKHpW4bDqTi3RNEYIi8th98meItx89_T8YL4gyzyOCXbo9-cqLQahPUaiFAJeBrJmF3z4TXuKjRSqlko5F3guxhw6vyYcufS3Jhq01DDQ55PQ/w400-h400/8E3F344B-FBBE-46B6-855E-721BC826B652.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>I paper pieced my letters and quilted this mini (18"x20") with my walking foot on my Janome. I had a wonderful time in Atlanta. One of the highlights for me was spending a good bit of time with my Quilts Unscripted bee mates. We had three beautiful quilts representing our bee in the show. </p><p>This is Time by Carole Lyles Shaw</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9Wn8f-KDK7R_FtKpqYXFxRdqipEw8Y1CJy_JtvV5p_g7myCknFzCcz6cfnRRzHIt9H7Nw_XqBSi6-TV7tCZbjnFTaL8g78l5jq_0l90caZH1gXdhbG4xYedjw7I_3VWyNp50GdJcsZYF_nQoaAY1rdYVkBuRtB7Y5XLr1kxaFnNq4z4pIETkxrRX30A/s1284/C02E77D2-8176-47C3-A2F2-D9CFF0AC83EB.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1271" data-original-width="1284" height="396" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9Wn8f-KDK7R_FtKpqYXFxRdqipEw8Y1CJy_JtvV5p_g7myCknFzCcz6cfnRRzHIt9H7Nw_XqBSi6-TV7tCZbjnFTaL8g78l5jq_0l90caZH1gXdhbG4xYedjw7I_3VWyNp50GdJcsZYF_nQoaAY1rdYVkBuRtB7Y5XLr1kxaFnNq4z4pIETkxrRX30A/w400-h396/C02E77D2-8176-47C3-A2F2-D9CFF0AC83EB.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I love seeing how each of us represented time in our blocks! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Elizabeth Ray had Sashes hanging in the show...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCK48p_AeqwkmFPqPby9IchDAJnXACs3Ng7xohtVf1wpnSBEvjniDVnTT3ZF68r7Q3_czTkFIV3r95zNvOMmHzfP8KGA-msy-NHW_KBDlTr7rhPJax3dZwn9xkXdDCL3gw7ibx8edAdldqM1GnaT_YaFzZa29YE0973wNbUhU7m1S4ZKUPSE_JJItGQg/s4032/705031F4-FD0F-483E-A278-873B71504E94.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCK48p_AeqwkmFPqPby9IchDAJnXACs3Ng7xohtVf1wpnSBEvjniDVnTT3ZF68r7Q3_czTkFIV3r95zNvOMmHzfP8KGA-msy-NHW_KBDlTr7rhPJax3dZwn9xkXdDCL3gw7ibx8edAdldqM1GnaT_YaFzZa29YE0973wNbUhU7m1S4ZKUPSE_JJItGQg/w300-h400/705031F4-FD0F-483E-A278-873B71504E94.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">again, wonderful representation of each bee member!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And my Darkest Before Dawn hung right next to Sashes...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1k6O8BGA8vnlSy4_uM7h7vkefNbWZoyVrAtseCdDD4ZeXKZY-xSY0UfAbdR7mtqO8sCwPZOAufm263bhpUgT8XXWji4XLEw5J9liYnqiR_opVJG2fysI6cx6YitxSQUdl4LL8asLWovbziaiRWXdsxNCg0Fkk9PUxg2JNJx2LvXJRJkr5ErfRaIdQJA/s2562/582EE6DA-59F2-4611-9601-D824D11AF177.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2562" data-original-width="2562" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1k6O8BGA8vnlSy4_uM7h7vkefNbWZoyVrAtseCdDD4ZeXKZY-xSY0UfAbdR7mtqO8sCwPZOAufm263bhpUgT8XXWji4XLEw5J9liYnqiR_opVJG2fysI6cx6YitxSQUdl4LL8asLWovbziaiRWXdsxNCg0Fkk9PUxg2JNJx2LvXJRJkr5ErfRaIdQJA/w400-h400/582EE6DA-59F2-4611-9601-D824D11AF177.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">But wait! I can't resist Nicholas Ball's (<a href="https://www.instagram.com/quiltsfromtheattic/">@quiltsfromtheattic)</a> improv triangle sew alongs, I've participated twice before (<a href="https://ellynsplace.blogspot.com/2020/03/improv-triangle-sew-along.html">here</a> and <a href="https://ellynsplace.blogspot.com/2021/10/triangle-trees.html">here)</a> and when he announced a third opportunity to sew along with him I jumped right in.</p><p>As I told you in my last post, I've been enjoying gelli printing lately. I had a stack of fabrics I had painted and quickly decided those should be triangles...</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwSk8bRNFz22cmLbHLU0a2e_J47sNQ0fUYpSEIJs0tqAxN0OzzB7V82ilGI3KbDzNBhPdSPKqD44PT6JDoQmvx9m-acMPbe4c4G5h4_3_qS1FHF61piX3mSiQcP7u9l1Ba0S0RjwnaX_-AnlYr1Hj9mzoWZieabiiJfrKxt78_Few7BF_raeHET-kV7g/s1176/DB7BF002-84D4-4938-8CDD-4BC2E55B7C1E.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1176" data-original-width="1176" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwSk8bRNFz22cmLbHLU0a2e_J47sNQ0fUYpSEIJs0tqAxN0OzzB7V82ilGI3KbDzNBhPdSPKqD44PT6JDoQmvx9m-acMPbe4c4G5h4_3_qS1FHF61piX3mSiQcP7u9l1Ba0S0RjwnaX_-AnlYr1Hj9mzoWZieabiiJfrKxt78_Few7BF_raeHET-kV7g/w400-h400/DB7BF002-84D4-4938-8CDD-4BC2E55B7C1E.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>After lots of cutting I had almost 90 triangles ready to sew! I pulled out my teal/aqua solids and began making triangle units using Nicholas' method. His <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Inspiring-Improv-Explore-Creative-Piecing/dp/1940655374/ref=sr_1_1?crid=26M5O0FGIP24V&keywords=nicholas+ball&qid=1676297422&sprefix=nicholas+ball%2Caps%2C153&sr=8-1">improv book</a> is one of my favorites! It was looking a bit ho hum to me until my friend <a href="https://www.sarahgoerquilts.com">Sarah</a> suggested I add splashes of orange. Perfect!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLW9LNNJEvhansz8uQaQg273CUJxp2WoNVvHfET9nI6k3oXq0IrWd0LC6vy3uDaEo9DRLNeyCZu480hrWtrugFUfRU3y7-82wTpBqqxOlXxSt_vc2-T5RCn89GVhqcpL2RRpGmOc5DjNPbzs6uKPt0_WlNSkDFI52GCsIQYorzr0-RYxt8U_Lhw8ANcg/s4032/3A8142C2-78BF-430A-974F-73345C979A5C.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLW9LNNJEvhansz8uQaQg273CUJxp2WoNVvHfET9nI6k3oXq0IrWd0LC6vy3uDaEo9DRLNeyCZu480hrWtrugFUfRU3y7-82wTpBqqxOlXxSt_vc2-T5RCn89GVhqcpL2RRpGmOc5DjNPbzs6uKPt0_WlNSkDFI52GCsIQYorzr0-RYxt8U_Lhw8ANcg/w300-h400/3A8142C2-78BF-430A-974F-73345C979A5C.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div><br /><p>Triangle units began to gather on my design wall. Week three is all about joining the triangle units together. If you look closely, you can see that I already got a jump start on this process. The middle section of my quilt is all puzzled together. This is my favorite part of improv quilting, puzzling the pieces together. I will have a finished quilt top by the end of this week and look forward to sharing it with you.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><p><br /></p>Ellynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03191087933892721297noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-852987718968550838.post-81387240546721635732023-02-02T15:40:00.003-06:002023-02-02T15:40:45.015-06:00another 100 day project<p> I am gearing up for another 100 day project! This will be my fourth time participating in the official <a href="https://www.the100dayproject.org">100 Day Project.</a> Last year I did <a href="http://ellynsplace.blogspot.com/2022/06/my-2022-100-days-project.html">100 improv shirt blocks </a>to commemorate the Great Resignation. In 2021, I had a<a href="http://ellynsplace.blogspot.com/2021/06/100-day-project.html"> 100 day monster drawing</a> project. And in 2020 I learned the <a href="https://ellynsplace.blogspot.com/2020/05/100-days-of-bojagi.html">Korean technique of Bojagi </a>hand sewing. Three totally different projects! I have a fun finish to share with you today. Here's me in a denim jacket I recently dug out of the back of our coat closet. I'd forgotten I even owned it! Here are some steps I took to attach my panel....</div><div><br /></div><div>I made a pattern that fit perfectly in the space I wanted to fill. I used pattern tracing paper so I could see through it. When I had the perfect fit, I laid it over my improv panel and two layers of cotton flannel. Then I cut all three layers into the perfect shape.</div><div><br /></div><div>I bound the edges of my layers with a single layer of 2 inch binding. I used bias cut strips to accommodate the curves on the sides of my pieces. I sewed the binding onto the front and neatly folded and pressed it around to the back. I didn't worry about the raw edge on the back since it would be completely encased.</div><div><br /></div><div>I pinned my piece onto the jacket and machine stitched all the way around at the outer edge of the binding. </div><div><br /></div><div>I wanted to secure my piece to the jacket back so it didn't pull away. Using size 8 perle cotton thread I stitched xs, running stitches and chain stitches embellishing the improv piece. My stitches went all the way through the layers attaching them to the jacket. And yes, you can see the back of my stitches inside the jacket.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfkDS80RwK1p84JbuMEPFfC9vKd12EJBIjE0FgGz-uqLF2dGMPYSOscKnWxeM_xU0AhSJjaldma54YSH8Q3GFMjMID69Ss3Xau4AjTer9Z_6RatwdlgM72Jjd4aZd1HD-LDMELBVQf3z2WrtQLAixOtVASEz4SoOvOiPCGeRrznVACmvjPeldn8KK3zg/s1440/98B59F44-F1C4-4D2A-9E65-3285BEBC8F4E.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1440" data-original-width="1440" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfkDS80RwK1p84JbuMEPFfC9vKd12EJBIjE0FgGz-uqLF2dGMPYSOscKnWxeM_xU0AhSJjaldma54YSH8Q3GFMjMID69Ss3Xau4AjTer9Z_6RatwdlgM72Jjd4aZd1HD-LDMELBVQf3z2WrtQLAixOtVASEz4SoOvOiPCGeRrznVACmvjPeldn8KK3zg/w400-h400/98B59F44-F1C4-4D2A-9E65-3285BEBC8F4E.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><div><p>I really love the end result! It seems I up and stopped blogging about six months ago! That was totally unplanned. I've still been over here creating and learning new skills. I'm not sure why I stopped blogging here, but now I am back with all of the good intentions a new year brings. </p><p>I thought I'd start by reviewing all of the bee blocks I made last year for the Quilts Unscripted Bee! Our improv bee is currently in the middle of it's second year and going strong. Here are the blocks I made in 2022.....</p><p>January</p><p>In January we made blocks for <a href="https://www.instagram.com/emilylangquilts/">Emily</a>. Her request was for blocks that represented our dreams, goals and growth using analogous colors on the color wheel. My first block represents my dreams/hopes for the world, peace and calm....</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcitChXS45x7S4UxS-uu3mtdrSgiImzKoy8tOAOCnMFQ7qI-QN8xGrEYoYgdgFBGzBot_vm2TO4L5eVLvJfJM2WJAhw1HDjoRCV5cWTHe5MpuQzBv2U_eeNjGOiKnwrU1ZhABCblI5ipa29VWubo01CmKJddE4VcEVZDs7t8FQ0tF1ax6Y9VwinvrmAA/s1440/59A0BCC8-9076-4339-81A2-067819559553.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1440" data-original-width="1440" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcitChXS45x7S4UxS-uu3mtdrSgiImzKoy8tOAOCnMFQ7qI-QN8xGrEYoYgdgFBGzBot_vm2TO4L5eVLvJfJM2WJAhw1HDjoRCV5cWTHe5MpuQzBv2U_eeNjGOiKnwrU1ZhABCblI5ipa29VWubo01CmKJddE4VcEVZDs7t8FQ0tF1ax6Y9VwinvrmAA/s320/59A0BCC8-9076-4339-81A2-067819559553.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>My second block represents my personal dreams of joy and energy.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-EXhNffTcVlAP9s59Udsfpx3DmUPb_QOurc7YW1VMycoGir9GjGS3xa4mFHNwfP6OrHuNw0xN16jlmJ6dhvIVoF-pUlgr6gl_cpGbww1ak0tC9iGQpOu3n46XqZCMHLJoNFNE4LureSeura32C6eMD35Qa7Pw93iiVQxrUwCKvCE417u79RPFdUs1Yw/s3024/68B78C25-46C4-474F-A95C-446388B7771C.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-EXhNffTcVlAP9s59Udsfpx3DmUPb_QOurc7YW1VMycoGir9GjGS3xa4mFHNwfP6OrHuNw0xN16jlmJ6dhvIVoF-pUlgr6gl_cpGbww1ak0tC9iGQpOu3n46XqZCMHLJoNFNE4LureSeura32C6eMD35Qa7Pw93iiVQxrUwCKvCE417u79RPFdUs1Yw/s320/68B78C25-46C4-474F-A95C-446388B7771C.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>February<div>In February I requested improv log cabin blocks using the Kona color of the year, Cosmos in a prescribed color palette. Geez. I will tell you I've been so busy making things I haven't made the time to blog! I guess that's a good thing, right? Anyways, I have some serious catching up to do. Let's start with today's finish, shall we?</p><p>Way back in February, I posted <a href="http://ellynsplace.blogspot.com/2022/02/preparing-for-my-100-day-project.html">here </a>about my plans for this year's 100 Day Project. Just to recap, I purchased recycled men's dress shirts at the Goodwill and planned to make 100 improv quilt blocks inspired by The Great Resignation (if you're not familiar with this concept, google it! So fascinating). I created a wheel using the Tiny Decisions App on my phone which gave me a way to randomly choose each day's block type.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP44p2L-mv1uk_j013c_AzmddDNTOVSmUg-xg95TQOrnaUw-TAP-8QH9ogQ0lka7LT_PyoEKBywpPUEpGtY6maC9i4ZE1C8dh1gJWm7oTgv-hKnQjncKCCmgkFeKzL_5facrqShUGC1lbsFH8TPnUmFBhvi4-I-GpQU1pjYgwNh-mNriMZcjUIuCZsSA/s1395/B0BCF4A5-C715-4A85-99F4-1C177B0C96B5.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1395" data-original-width="1125" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP44p2L-mv1uk_j013c_AzmddDNTOVSmUg-xg95TQOrnaUw-TAP-8QH9ogQ0lka7LT_PyoEKBywpPUEpGtY6maC9i4ZE1C8dh1gJWm7oTgv-hKnQjncKCCmgkFeKzL_5facrqShUGC1lbsFH8TPnUmFBhvi4-I-GpQU1pjYgwNh-mNriMZcjUIuCZsSA/w323-h400/B0BCF4A5-C715-4A85-99F4-1C177B0C96B5.jpeg" width="323" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I also created a hand written document to keep track of each day's blocks. I shared the story of my <a href="http://ellynsplace.blogspot.com/p/through-ellyns-eyes.html">Through Ellyn's Eyes</a> project with them and the members were very engaged and asked lots of questions. I hope they were also inspired to perhaps begin projects of their own!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div>My friend Chris went with me on this fun road trip and served as my driver/quilt holder. So I pulled out a piece of cardstock and started drawing!<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgp7qo_yZrArXLIQatDuwuuoA3K8MpZrKANw49JyOuhJ8ZFKd2s8oT3EK-nmNdVO2pQXvfpdpy6pqwytG_nCosOptWsy1dWkb8JozqwUIgH4nmboNSDm0FvwG68j8r3y-a8SNUbFjEsF0JfholL-_xEoQ10LLQ22Ijha5ta4qazmyVn1rGb0xyzqoce5A=s2129" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2129" data-original-width="2129" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgp7qo_yZrArXLIQatDuwuuoA3K8MpZrKANw49JyOuhJ8ZFKd2s8oT3EK-nmNdVO2pQXvfpdpy6pqwytG_nCosOptWsy1dWkb8JozqwUIgH4nmboNSDm0FvwG68j8r3y-a8SNUbFjEsF0JfholL-_xEoQ10LLQ22Ijha5ta4qazmyVn1rGb0xyzqoce5A=w400-h400" width="400" /></a></div>8 point diamonds were the main pieces in the quilt. Many of them made by friends of mine which I found so exciting.</p><p>Debbie Jeske's "Rings" hung in the group category and I just love it! So much fun to see quilts in real life that you have long admired online. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj5mR3XVPoK8WtUw0ul0-IlqAXMJHpLuyKO0Ht-LkXUOX7cyG4ooVj4SWdnADsw_xtHPjJ1_PSdSoDJ5f-XSpPQAEuquZyy56XZkhyNYSi5U2YAEYmo9wI1u6pvf_oa2qmWfxMIlTBbuGbgshFWJzPkKxle4sqxvvoAc4LjQAGJNKQQR7fhw3foDDPm2w=s3024" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj5mR3XVPoK8WtUw0ul0-IlqAXMJHpLuyKO0Ht-LkXUOX7cyG4ooVj4SWdnADsw_xtHPjJ1_PSdSoDJ5f-XSpPQAEuquZyy56XZkhyNYSi5U2YAEYmo9wI1u6pvf_oa2qmWfxMIlTBbuGbgshFWJzPkKxle4sqxvvoAc4LjQAGJNKQQR7fhw3foDDPm2w=w400-h400" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Leo Ransom, a guild mate of mine, won first place in the appliqué category for his stunning quilt "Double the Hipster". Leo's work is just incredible! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgo7s0k-1txkdvIKhKXgKt9rZ3f9mhridGK0QSLY7tMZF45otzfNmbEf9oPQ6WflqOFhAbLHGeMfx_wWSwBHrsBZYUouIBoNxfCRO_3A_teW9yULp9LGhSDAzF4K2QRE6LiwoHuzM57dr7MehBznWd0xH7o3GGcHLxkjUloGQPO1PjWC56sD4Z3LErCSg=s3024" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgo7s0k-1txkdvIKhKXgKt9rZ3f9mhridGK0QSLY7tMZF45otzfNmbEf9oPQ6WflqOFhAbLHGeMfx_wWSwBHrsBZYUouIBoNxfCRO_3A_teW9yULp9LGhSDAzF4K2QRE6LiwoHuzM57dr7MehBznWd0xH7o3GGcHLxkjUloGQPO1PjWC56sD4Z3LErCSg=w400-h400" width="400" /></a></div>Annie Hadnut had several quilts in the show and honestly, I took pictures of nearly all of them! I joke that I might be the president of Annie's fan club, which is probably true. It was fun to catch up with her at the show in person. Here's "Big Red Ball", just one of her amazing contributions this year.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgEuzxvZITruN32Xp9PxV4t23rOubxsJC-GB6jm97cCdIPYdJbJkCmsHSLgi-Yb2JIvTyjv4DUqnI3heHSKtP0mWHqWVTSZSB5ZPR5GgrdyA94_8OvyxhC89AmSQJ-2W2ABsE22aF6cz07FR8xeNkP16Bbghxm_gHLVeZ0Eht3uodkmcEo7pFYlDIkBvA=s2555" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2555" data-original-width="2530" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgEuzxvZITruN32Xp9PxV4t23rOubxsJC-GB6jm97cCdIPYdJbJkCmsHSLgi-Yb2JIvTyjv4DUqnI3heHSKtP0mWHqWVTSZSB5ZPR5GgrdyA94_8OvyxhC89AmSQJ-2W2ABsE22aF6cz07FR8xeNkP16Bbghxm_gHLVeZ0Eht3uodkmcEo7pFYlDIkBvA=w396-h400" width="396" /></a></div><br /><div>My pal Sarah had her first quilt in the show, with her entry into the Hexagon challenge, "Hexie Halves". It was fun to see it in person. I only wish she had been there too!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgRVbBmFjtOdWwPt_fC7fjXGANEo6Er_OCq3bD_fj30SEwKy1BMFGGO4QvzPwVVs4nrI3qRWlYY-o-I64Nhz4xym8LM4sht-a8Fu08tWrYKTjbhyAxEBhfSyTf1bcm0113l3QMyNI0gnKgkTcm-At8jpUzfQK2LDnx30zWAi7toHjzGDdwZKyxNEv_Mbw=s2835" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2835" data-original-width="2835" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgRVbBmFjtOdWwPt_fC7fjXGANEo6Er_OCq3bD_fj30SEwKy1BMFGGO4QvzPwVVs4nrI3qRWlYY-o-I64Nhz4xym8LM4sht-a8Fu08tWrYKTjbhyAxEBhfSyTf1bcm0113l3QMyNI0gnKgkTcm-At8jpUzfQK2LDnx30zWAi7toHjzGDdwZKyxNEv_Mbw=w400-h400" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div>Charles Cameron's "Sudoku" won first place in small quilts. I've had the opportunity to get to know Charles online and loved seeing this cool quilt! Such great precision piecing on a tiny quilt. Each number block is 4 1/4" square!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjQZEcI_4LVmnUP8M8wSQhT7rOi3WdUqYEZSZsoghp5vfakRrO4Yv5aWVS-M1eS4WOQFFhbD5NgnNR2kLmg3gk4ldpnflO4pr0A8TeirxiIj2kUPySvbzb0HW3wUs4QXhTPBABOJx1oxDIyQhioDG_VdNkKwQD1xtm8BWo7NLvDRLuw6gN4qJInN-Gs3w=s3024" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjQZEcI_4LVmnUP8M8wSQhT7rOi3WdUqYEZSZsoghp5vfakRrO4Yv5aWVS-M1eS4WOQFFhbD5NgnNR2kLmg3gk4ldpnflO4pr0A8TeirxiIj2kUPySvbzb0HW3wUs4QXhTPBABOJx1oxDIyQhioDG_VdNkKwQD1xtm8BWo7NLvDRLuw6gN4qJInN-Gs3w=w400-h400" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div>I thought Kathy Cook's "Planet Triangle" quilt was great fun! It was made as part of Nicholas Ball's improv triangle quilt along.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgSJhV32g0io_eVnTkX4fvaGK63CGs3J7vZiJjKZy_tXF0jbXJ8UR-fnqU2I0fh4mWqvVAdEoox6AC1l_KI0FRYfT10KEbfbh963vfWpd5ovXDk5KoZlvYsjEOPeWQFs4EoKCprjCN1Y3RhFA2QuWZhSiBrGzVOTMVHiMONfQMatr_MebaqMmL5OAQygw=s2808" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2808" data-original-width="2808" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgSJhV32g0io_eVnTkX4fvaGK63CGs3J7vZiJjKZy_tXF0jbXJ8UR-fnqU2I0fh4mWqvVAdEoox6AC1l_KI0FRYfT10KEbfbh963vfWpd5ovXDk5KoZlvYsjEOPeWQFs4EoKCprjCN1Y3RhFA2QuWZhSiBrGzVOTMVHiMONfQMatr_MebaqMmL5OAQygw=w400-h400" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">My beemate and friend Elizabeth Ray had several quilts in the show too. I especially love her entry into the Artisan Cotton Fabric Challenge, called "Positive Turning Point".</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiQwHm0Ywj-EL8FDSrHzJ3O7x7MYDlobiNHdTUBq8Ud2AtCOLmV4MAThWIqqgtmC7TIKx7ettCnBiYSeloyQSoUB_j_Ugxyy4-CGdQ9JZjtgfL5Eea7aALO1E0mMrcdR6OeBXFjm1oYtYc3n7OQ-HhuK29S36eKxlcd5BDQ1fp5M0N-76hmnyVF6ym8EA=s2954" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2954" data-original-width="2954" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiQwHm0Ywj-EL8FDSrHzJ3O7x7MYDlobiNHdTUBq8Ud2AtCOLmV4MAThWIqqgtmC7TIKx7ettCnBiYSeloyQSoUB_j_Ugxyy4-CGdQ9JZjtgfL5Eea7aALO1E0mMrcdR6OeBXFjm1oYtYc3n7OQ-HhuK29S36eKxlcd5BDQ1fp5M0N-76hmnyVF6ym8EA=w400-h400" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Another friend I missed seeing this year was Jayne Willis. Some observations:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Color! There were so many quilts in stunning saturated color, more than ever before I think. </li><li>Many quilters had a quilt in the show for the first time! More than 1/3 of the quilts juried into this year's show were by first time featured quilters which I love.</li><li>The show was thoughtfully laid out with clear attention paid to hanging quilts in an order that made sense.</li></ul><div>I can't wait to see the show next year in Atlanta! Phoenix was a blast (ok truth time here, I'm still in Phoenix! Hubby and I stayed a few extra days to enjoy family here, Dallas iced over and many flights were canceled. We'll make it home eventually!)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It was super fun to see my quilt <a href="https://ellynsplace.blogspot.com/search?q=urban+emergence">Urban Emergence</a> hanging in the Quiltcon Together winners exhibit! The ladies from Curated Quilts snuck me into the hall a few minutes before the show opened the first day and I stopped dead in my tracks seeing it hanging there. Oh, and they did an interview with me that you can listen to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CaFhQdbJ0XM/">here</a>. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhHFXOqzH5sbgumsYVaOYnpyUH0IGrUnwACc2ebS0djpwskQxRbp493WqfNy7KIV69ho7w4X8fVv7M7AqyWwL6i1DI4LmibPgxdxYR7UirJ34bP7T155LRbQjobdhqFXq-mJ3cjL0MJNnUc8__XEmws3SeiE9y5v5KnOpkmzEB1rnxbNToHrIkuV48T8g=s4032" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhHFXOqzH5sbgumsYVaOYnpyUH0IGrUnwACc2ebS0djpwskQxRbp493WqfNy7KIV69ho7w4X8fVv7M7AqyWwL6i1DI4LmibPgxdxYR7UirJ34bP7T155LRbQjobdhqFXq-mJ3cjL0MJNnUc8__XEmws3SeiE9y5v5KnOpkmzEB1rnxbNToHrIkuV48T8g=w400-h300" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I love when people post who their "quilt neighbors" are at Quiltcon. Today we are both sharing something exciting that we've been working on for a long time - BYOC! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">You might be wondering exactly what those initials stand for. Blue yams on cake? Buy yarn on clearance? haha nope. It's <b>Build Your Own Collaboration</b>!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Maybe you are familiar with restaurant menus presented this way. Some places have a build your own pizza.... choose a crust (gluten free for me please), choose a sauce (I'll have the marinara) choose a topping (mushrooms and black olives anyone?) and a cheese (always mozzarella for me!). Or build your own sandwich (bread, meats, veggies, dressing, sides), or build your own bowl (I'm going with brown rice, grilled shrimp, all the veggies and gluten free teriyaki sauce). Is everybody hungry now? Yeah, me too.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Anyways, Karen and I got to thinking, what if there was a menu to help you plan your collaborations? And BYOC was born. We even created a BYOC bookmark for all of you! If you are attending Quiltcon this week, find one of us and we will happily give you one. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi6PZ462WptiPCF_H9UYKIpzLRz3SOaBOmt5mIEUDAWa4LfR4NPMnEMpY7_44pEu7r-eExSkA5go3Yhx8rldK0Tc_MLko62qX5h6o9RPdKSmwIR2n-cZR1w43S5-VYbshsnbSrUPlHf5v2WP0il-1tcwFtpu0NfX2M25uYo2t1hXDjofoskz1zaM1TsXA=s3024" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi6PZ462WptiPCF_H9UYKIpzLRz3SOaBOmt5mIEUDAWa4LfR4NPMnEMpY7_44pEu7r-eExSkA5go3Yhx8rldK0Tc_MLko62qX5h6o9RPdKSmwIR2n-cZR1w43S5-VYbshsnbSrUPlHf5v2WP0il-1tcwFtpu0NfX2M25uYo2t1hXDjofoskz1zaM1TsXA=w400-h400" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Not going to Quiltcon? No worries! We've made a pdf printable you can access from home. Find that <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Fqv0R-tLvradrDJ6o5wdsUNNEpDViphA/view">here.</a> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The menu is tried and true! We used it to plan our Welcoming Lamp quilt back in the fall, and we are using it again for our Mushroom project. Does its include everything? No, that would be impossible. In fact that could fill a book. Some things it does not address include Building your Collaboration Team, and Setting deadlines. Topics it does include? Great question.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">What is the <b>Purpose</b> of your project? Is it a charity quilt or a quilt for a cause? Is it to educate people? Build Community? A gift or for exhibition? Maybe more than one of these things? You can always check more than one box, it's your project after all!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">What is your <b>Source of inspiration?</b> Will it be a topical quilt? Maybe inspired by a photo or another art source. Could be a traditional block or pattern.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">What is the <b>Contribution type? </b>Will each member contribute blocks? Maybe your quilt will be done in a series or round robin style. Will you split the labor (one person pieces ,someone else quilts, another person binds) or will it be non pieced art or individual projects that link together somehow? </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Where will you <b>Source your fabric</b>? Will group members work from their stash? Swap frabric? Purchase specifically for the project? Or maybe a combination of these things.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Lastly, how will you <b>Finish your quilt? </b>Will group members piece individually or as a group? will you pay a longarm quilter? Or maybe one of the group members will volunteer to do the quilting. A group quilting bee would be a fun option!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We hope you'll print out our BYOC menu or grab a bookmark from us at Quiltcon and use it to get to Collaborating!</div><br /><p></p>Ellynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03191087933892721297noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-852987718968550838.post-7302134353940915782022-02-11T16:26:00.000-06:002022-02-11T16:26:24.509-06:00MQG Mini swap<p> I can't believe this is the sixth year I've participated in the MQG Miniquilt Swap! It's fun to swap at Quiltcon each year and make a new quilty friend. That was the plan this year but again (still?) Covid got in the way and my partner is choosing not to make the trip. I get that! Did we let that stop us from fun? Heck no! <a href="https://www.instagram.com/quiltconscious/">Betty</a> and I decided to FaceTime and swap our quilts live as soon as they both arrived. We were able to do that this week. </p><p>My quilt got to Betty in California right on schedule. I made her a variation on my <a href="http://ellynsplace.blogspot.com/2021/11/welcome-to-my-neighborhood.html">Welcome to my neighborhood </a>quilt.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh8EdE4hL9kKNWCYHRIWmvV1EQ3TJ04QDERuXgOvLnmE5Iai7GKjKS6POjKwkbBC0rXSrwZRZQ_8jBb7sX03jrmFhagYkE9BTV9uI_ad7_hSVLECkIp4uXs44WBfD7u9hOGaD1KYdeYch_zUn5EhxWqh47bsZzp57xaFzUNiCTY5AfFBAZsc5WtvlQ4fg=s3024" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh8EdE4hL9kKNWCYHRIWmvV1EQ3TJ04QDERuXgOvLnmE5Iai7GKjKS6POjKwkbBC0rXSrwZRZQ_8jBb7sX03jrmFhagYkE9BTV9uI_ad7_hSVLECkIp4uXs44WBfD7u9hOGaD1KYdeYch_zUn5EhxWqh47bsZzp57xaFzUNiCTY5AfFBAZsc5WtvlQ4fg=w400-h400" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>She seemed really happy with it.... whew! I have really enjoyed doing this the last two years. You can read about my <a href="https://ellynsplace.blogspot.com/2020/05/100-days-of-bojagi.html">bojagi project</a> (2020) and my <a href="https://ellynsplace.blogspot.com/2021/06/100-day-project.html">monster project</a> (2021) here on the blog. Both of these focused on learning a new skill, which I thoroughly enjoyed. This year, I'm heading in yet another direction.</p><p>I was inspired by the phenomenon of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Resignation">the Great Resignation of 2021,</a> where Americans resigned from their jobs en masse, initially as a covid response then later as a general strike against workplace policies/pay and government replies. I decided to make a quilt in response to this issue. Also, it is not lost on me that while everyone was resigning from the work force this past year, my husband had the opportunity to return to work in a career he loves, after a long stretch of unemployment. There is irony there for sure.</p><p>First step was to gather supplies. I purchased 15 mens dress shirts from Goodwill and another thrift shop, where they had symbolically been left to die as their owners resigned from jobs.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj59zrHcx1tDwKxwjV802hmAhkfg7UEpJaJ4pIB3YnAe17U8lwKNV6FfsvvZRAKOHZeUGfH0920Hg_Bfck8d_YnYDX2oMsxhpcuZaWTVnSt1vKEqgnmxnOx9ss220ndggciP8ZCY4wbdkCKAYkZUiTm2VMMr8EdNSXAWubJT3SILQKSun9PqOc0-mGrQQ=s4032" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj59zrHcx1tDwKxwjV802hmAhkfg7UEpJaJ4pIB3YnAe17U8lwKNV6FfsvvZRAKOHZeUGfH0920Hg_Bfck8d_YnYDX2oMsxhpcuZaWTVnSt1vKEqgnmxnOx9ss220ndggciP8ZCY4wbdkCKAYkZUiTm2VMMr8EdNSXAWubJT3SILQKSun9PqOc0-mGrQQ=w300-h400" width="300" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I tried to get a good mix of colors, in stripes, plaids and solids. My pal Chris quickly pointed me to the larger mens sizes where I could get more fabric for the same price. With deep discounts, a senior discount and some good searching, I ended up spending a little over $5 for each shirt.</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgjOh0sjpFTIqbGZKonYEEnIgMPhV7QukoRXPmbzimip8cvzko7Xcuf3JstY6I4gR3ZJCz4yLmot7pkTNio6y9B_1P-w84gTApjykFfvug51UGv6d8eZplIdJdBL9dkL5UqidioRnJRSBnw9FzHOfM-rjLqmzdvEVKVAgbGT5OF3IWSo6JfAX3ANF2DxQ=s3024" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgjOh0sjpFTIqbGZKonYEEnIgMPhV7QukoRXPmbzimip8cvzko7Xcuf3JstY6I4gR3ZJCz4yLmot7pkTNio6y9B_1P-w84gTApjykFfvug51UGv6d8eZplIdJdBL9dkL5UqidioRnJRSBnw9FzHOfM-rjLqmzdvEVKVAgbGT5OF3IWSo6JfAX3ANF2DxQ=w400-h400" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This is what 15 shirts looks like! Recently we decided to offer up tandem blog posts twice a month diving deeper into some of the topics we've discussed. I hope you'll hop over to <a href="https://www.karenbolan.com/blog">Karen's blog</a> and read what she has to say today. I will tell you, today's post really challenged me!<p></p><p>One thing Karen and I have done together is develop a method for creating collaborative projects. We'll be sharing more about that method in part 6 of our series in two weeks. Meanwhile, we've been testing out our method by creating some collaborations of our own. Our first project done this way was the creation of Welcoming Lamp, which you can read more about <a href="https://ellynsplace.blogspot.com/2021/10/welcoming-lamp.html">here</a>. We invited several other quilters to participate in the creation of this quilt.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhqvqMWRvePcKMbIel48Qxf5H-pixLwgrSjnGyxjWlzfvVnR5wLUEjjiYuhHYCE6qbdlHn4kMb56kbNMTx1NcN6xAWs-4j2psp1it6nQ4q6q7puWIXqZrHccj_xgdYT8zOtcX4YCBjGVf6fzEDkk3BE86O3Sczi9ReC_2FbshqaIbXmeESFELMSifZcOw=s2048" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhqvqMWRvePcKMbIel48Qxf5H-pixLwgrSjnGyxjWlzfvVnR5wLUEjjiYuhHYCE6qbdlHn4kMb56kbNMTx1NcN6xAWs-4j2psp1it6nQ4q6q7puWIXqZrHccj_xgdYT8zOtcX4YCBjGVf6fzEDkk3BE86O3Sczi9ReC_2FbshqaIbXmeESFELMSifZcOw=w300-h400" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Welcoming Lamp</td></tr></tbody></table><br />For our next project, Karen and I are choosing to make a quilt just between the two of us. An important part of the development of any collaboration is knowing what your inspiration is. Recently, Karen has been inspired by a Netflix documentary called <a href="fantastic fungi">Fantastic Fungi</a>. Yes, you read that right! It's a movie about mushrooms. <div><br /></div><div>You need to know that I am not a science person. Not one bit. When Karen suggested I watch this movie with quilting in mind, I was skeptical. What could mushrooms have to do with quilters, specifically quilting in community? I opened up my mind and watched the documentary, taking notes and surprising myself with some of the insights that came my way. I have a lot more digging to do on this topic, but here are some of the revelations I've had so far.....</div><div><br /></div><div>* Fungi are incredibly diverse. There are millions of different kinds of fungi, JUST LIKE PEOPLE! </div><div><br /></div><div>* Fungi are changers, creating evolution. Fungi are what changes corn into bourbon, for example. It networks with the environment to cause change. Don't we do that as quilters? We use our creative powers to change pieces of fabric into works of art. </div><div><br /></div><div>* Communities of fungi survive much better than individuals. The strengths of one type might influence and strengthen another. They work together to create things that are of mutual benefit. Sound familiar? When we work in community with other quilters, don't we thrive? We empower each other to create powerful works that reflect our combined strengths.</div><div><br /></div><div>Of course this is simplistic and selective. There are dangerous mushrooms that can weaken and even kill us. There are magic mushrooms that can cause us to hallucinate. But I'm choosing to stick with the positive impacts of fungi. </div><div><br /></div><div>How will all of this knowledge evolve into a quilt? That's a very good question; one I don't have the answer to just yet. Karen and I will continue to explore and create and you get to have a front row seat to our process. Buckle up, this promises to be a bit of a wild ride!</div><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0 0 0 40px; padding: 0px;"><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0 0 0 40px; padding: 0px;"><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0 0 0 40px; padding: 0px;"><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0 0 0 40px; padding: 0px;"><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0 0 0 40px; padding: 0px;"><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div></blockquote></blockquote></blockquote></blockquote></blockquote><div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p></div>Ellynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03191087933892721297noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-852987718968550838.post-19975845104457192492022-01-20T18:07:00.000-06:002022-01-20T18:07:08.420-06:00A new Tunic<p>Every now and then I get the urge to return to my roots and make myself a garment. These days, due to some hard earned weight loss (Go me!) all of my clothes are baggy on me. I'm trying to put off buying new clothes, but thought a fun make or two might be in order. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjsrTYGl8gPmKce0aJ8z0hOVkJ73QJitHkuE89gMJb5h-kq-DE5AKxO5yngNMvnc4v1XHXP8gHuju1CJ55N9YNPtv3ciqjFVOVaF62K-R80fLUJSFAL_RAaZBv8bjXtpW00aqWFK66USMDFT240GwFb3sVDl_uKYxqPTnydSiu1zp63OxJj-D37pENLyA=s1440" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1440" data-original-width="1440" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjsrTYGl8gPmKce0aJ8z0hOVkJ73QJitHkuE89gMJb5h-kq-DE5AKxO5yngNMvnc4v1XHXP8gHuju1CJ55N9YNPtv3ciqjFVOVaF62K-R80fLUJSFAL_RAaZBv8bjXtpW00aqWFK66USMDFT240GwFb3sVDl_uKYxqPTnydSiu1zp63OxJj-D37pENLyA=w400-h400" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>I'm really happy with how this tunic turned out! I used McCalls pattern #7284 and by adding french seams to the side seams it is nicely finished on the inside which is always a plus for me. The fabric is Modcloth by Free Spirit Fabric with Grunge that I happened to have on hand as the placket.... a nice match.</p><p>Now I have the itch to make more garments! Hubby gifted me a beautiful African wax print for Christmas that I think will become a full skirt soon. Stay tuned!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjzYabuenyvJwpt2_zydp3y7tDa-F_bFyxPqxZBvZJPDHLFGk4BihIJSb5lNE0NuNf7-Mz4YUtw1iekSPYUWyxt5UXYSsrOMiyvBRKAU7VCyCnEvZHGSNx3tI7q9Og-LOd0bIps8REvGeB9LSgJpD6hLrwatuRenwtt1_vUKoFjs1VGXdH1GiDxpxyJpQ=s1440" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1440" data-original-width="1440" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjzYabuenyvJwpt2_zydp3y7tDa-F_bFyxPqxZBvZJPDHLFGk4BihIJSb5lNE0NuNf7-Mz4YUtw1iekSPYUWyxt5UXYSsrOMiyvBRKAU7VCyCnEvZHGSNx3tI7q9Og-LOd0bIps8REvGeB9LSgJpD6hLrwatuRenwtt1_vUKoFjs1VGXdH1GiDxpxyJpQ=s320" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Ellynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03191087933892721297noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-852987718968550838.post-13052275550901516802022-01-19T07:00:00.095-06:002022-01-19T07:00:00.216-06:00Exploring Collaboration: part 4<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjC5C8fYzsGYs9yWbsm6sD97_V5WC4umk9PEk1rwOUtagJgxhPiHwTQTzzX0xRDxNa7JRwLzs4zf_NQdxqeWao2scH-vDYMeFWWucuOh0ZuxlZFzJp50ylXdzSpdUJiEDALe0PgiytmcdUoPCFbrCXd3S09QrXn9eDuv-l3em3Mshw4q-01-_pjJ19mCA=s1080" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjC5C8fYzsGYs9yWbsm6sD97_V5WC4umk9PEk1rwOUtagJgxhPiHwTQTzzX0xRDxNa7JRwLzs4zf_NQdxqeWao2scH-vDYMeFWWucuOh0ZuxlZFzJp50ylXdzSpdUJiEDALe0PgiytmcdUoPCFbrCXd3S09QrXn9eDuv-l3em3Mshw4q-01-_pjJ19mCA=s320" width="320" /></a></div><p>Today is the fourth installment of Exploring Collaboration, a series of blog posts offered up twice a month by <a href="https://www.karenbolan.com/blog">Karen Bolan</a> and me. We've really enjoyed sharing our thoughts with you and look forward to future conversations about collaboration with many fellow quilters.</p><p>For this week's exploration of collaboration, I have a specific idea that you might try with a group of friends. Hopefully the world will soon begin to open up again and we will be more able to join with fellow quilters on retreats, for quilting days, workshops and other in person activities. Here's a collaborative activity you and your group might like to try! A friend and I came up with this idea a couple of years ago (pre-pandemic). It will work best with a group of 4-8, if you have more just split into two groups!</p><p>To begin this activity, each participant arrives with an already completed 24" block. For my example, we each start with an improv log cabin. They can be wonky (or not), symmetrical (or not), prints, solids, you name it. The important thing (for ease) is that all of the beginning blocks are 24" square. Each person also needs to bring a 2 1/2" strip of their "signature fabric" cut into 4 6" rectangles. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhDENhwmny0h5cTWDhpvz-wAyuPUk2kpsKSoY1uOxg2bVhF2m6M_X-jz0vhhSnen5xgw9eh52kCN-Pr9J3TuKpjVgl-UkyYAlnQusAfMvI0GzBqYpLrTs0NeS_i66nM8h698-W-E9IdeU9OkycZ0k8p3hobUzb5Tmyv7gwrbi4qV0EokW11d5DX7SJozA=s3024" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhDENhwmny0h5cTWDhpvz-wAyuPUk2kpsKSoY1uOxg2bVhF2m6M_X-jz0vhhSnen5xgw9eh52kCN-Pr9J3TuKpjVgl-UkyYAlnQusAfMvI0GzBqYpLrTs0NeS_i66nM8h698-W-E9IdeU9OkycZ0k8p3hobUzb5Tmyv7gwrbi4qV0EokW11d5DX7SJozA=w400-h400" width="400" /></a></div><p>Participants should be seated in a circle of sorts so that projects can easily be passed from one to the next. First up, everyone passes their block to the person next to them (clockwise passing works well!) Now take the block you have received and cut it into 16 equal 6" squares. If you have a 6"x24" ruler this will be easy to do!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjBZ8Udw0YdD9y4QGl0cOvbPDqwYK1DGQYhB9VzYcvTt4FAcoxR1EyhXTPmEycsU81S7gCT02LC1P1VSGCBIBST33UhNKvB-5gqCTpBKZ8eBjaELXDXCfQ47elVOpHbzqb9pmoeHtUCuRLK_sUY0WgN3aO0sJSm0tZyFUJe55Aqdowd5z__4HMF685HOA=s3024" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjBZ8Udw0YdD9y4QGl0cOvbPDqwYK1DGQYhB9VzYcvTt4FAcoxR1EyhXTPmEycsU81S7gCT02LC1P1VSGCBIBST33UhNKvB-5gqCTpBKZ8eBjaELXDXCfQ47elVOpHbzqb9pmoeHtUCuRLK_sUY0WgN3aO0sJSm0tZyFUJe55Aqdowd5z__4HMF685HOA=s320" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjl4dZX800udarKgKjA7pW8NMZYOGqLRJf6pA6c5N6WF-7V6pQxh1AtV0UaXW1LhtfkipL5enKj6uPsUf1xYvU5uM52sXHelXtpvtnFq3jnwkM_ptBSx8tOcqlkpwSGDUcnepMFfFYrocko4oBXa7UM2bKFsB9WmG05H7FhTGmBu2q3D2yZL8iO_p8z7w=s3024" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjl4dZX800udarKgKjA7pW8NMZYOGqLRJf6pA6c5N6WF-7V6pQxh1AtV0UaXW1LhtfkipL5enKj6uPsUf1xYvU5uM52sXHelXtpvtnFq3jnwkM_ptBSx8tOcqlkpwSGDUcnepMFfFYrocko4oBXa7UM2bKFsB9WmG05H7FhTGmBu2q3D2yZL8iO_p8z7w=s320" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiwhshFz-p4x8x_DgHcv__Q0J_p5gEGC8im2sJi6k6E0yVzOGRxTBkLvtDF_xsLUXtbPSrpXhe4nxWy_1KhPphg4GqLK4lsyHBdXMGwKHl3hz0_nnUs5Sd1TTooByW7N26aM5qmpZr7g2RAUKzAKtqOQfRILRpXLCW5_eXx-u0H9EFroSRioMbrVs1kFA=s3024" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiwhshFz-p4x8x_DgHcv__Q0J_p5gEGC8im2sJi6k6E0yVzOGRxTBkLvtDF_xsLUXtbPSrpXhe4nxWy_1KhPphg4GqLK4lsyHBdXMGwKHl3hz0_nnUs5Sd1TTooByW7N26aM5qmpZr7g2RAUKzAKtqOQfRILRpXLCW5_eXx-u0H9EFroSRioMbrVs1kFA=s320" width="320" /></a></div><p>Now gather up the squares you have cut and pass them to the next person in line.</p><p>Mix up the squares you have received. You can find the first two entries in our series <a href="http://ellynsplace.blogspot.com/search/label/exploring%20collaboration">here</a> on my blog and on <a href="https://www.karenbolan.com/blog">Karen's blog</a> as well.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> This week Karen and I are exploring some of the myths that might keep you from jumping on the collaboration bandwagon. If you're like me, you might make up stories in your head about things that "might happen" if you collaborate with other quilters. And, I'm not going to lie, some of them might! But there are ways to avoid them and ways to deal with them when they do. Here are just a couple of collaboration myths that I've faced.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><b>#1 Others in the group might not follow through.</b></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Possible. However, in my experience, it doesn't happen as often as you might think! Most people who sign up for a collaborative experience really want to be there. If you've carefully selected your collaborative partners and established clear rules for the group <a href="https://ellynsplace.blogspot.com/2021/12/exploring-collaboration-tips-and-tricks.html">as I discussed in my earlier post</a>, chances are everyone will do their best to participate fully. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">What do you do if members are not reliable? Here are some things to consider...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">- if you are in charge of the group, you can talk to the person and work out a solution. Often life just happens and the collaborator might be overwhelmed or embarrassed that they can't do their part. Communication is key! Can a deadline be extended? Can someone else fill in for the person until they are able to rejoin? Does the person really need to back away permanently? All are valid.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">- show lots of grace! I've found that this is an important factor in all aspects of life, but especially when I'm collaborating with others. Forgive and move on.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><b>#2 I won't end up with enough blocks to complete my quilt.</b></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This is closely related to myth #1. First of all, you will ALWAYS have enough to make a quilt. It may not be the king sized bed quilt you envisioned, but it will indeed be a quilt! Some things to think about...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">- try to go into collaboration with an open mind. Expect the unexpected! You may end up short a few blocks, blocks may be different than you had originally pictured. Colors may vary, sizes, techniques... it's ok. Whatever you receive reflects the group you are working with.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">- if you want the quilt to be bigger, add more blocks of your own, add sashing or borders to the blocks you receive or even lots of negative space. It's your quilt in the end! </div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjF1YJgb2vt1TDoPEPoPfiwuxgzVqCu07Q-NpzamFZPf8SneGVEfQjDgyH89appDZM098gdAS9NmrelA1yUAcH0o2JhJumDkS7PvMZ3YUB91E_BEKRGmA7bzM8zBVCrN_YfHncm-fYCRzRvFi3FJghaiLIRs4QD70kGVO1wj3nAn8mi3Hw5tooQml7olQ=s4239" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2818" data-original-width="4239" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjF1YJgb2vt1TDoPEPoPfiwuxgzVqCu07Q-NpzamFZPf8SneGVEfQjDgyH89appDZM098gdAS9NmrelA1yUAcH0o2JhJumDkS7PvMZ3YUB91E_BEKRGmA7bzM8zBVCrN_YfHncm-fYCRzRvFi3FJghaiLIRs4QD70kGVO1wj3nAn8mi3Hw5tooQml7olQ=w400-h266" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;">This bee quilt was intended to be for my queen sized bed, but some blocks did not arrive! I added tons of negative space. When folded right, it makes a beautiful bed runner across the foot of my bed. When a few blocks arrived late, after I had already pieced the quilt, I made some matching throw pillows and was able to use them all.<br /></span><br /><br style="text-align: left;" /></td></tr></tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I wanted my Japanese x and + quilt to be bigger. Making one giant block added interest to my quilt and went faster than creating four extra blocks<br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiZVcbWDQxI8PASbxy5SCCRuF00o2-Oou5Z20XBg6fal8dMOymw_c_CBEQMRuYxxBE9C5tvQayTtXaUT_6lljlQ16G5Qf7lrSrwbPE5ymhD4mF5JTC8T7wyqC7kCvqKg-Vrx02YWZPHSVeIuXesO7XdSYLWEHxsXtYsIbkkpFd3UTmvuvHvYrrEiqcGXA=s2272" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2272" data-original-width="2272" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiZVcbWDQxI8PASbxy5SCCRuF00o2-Oou5Z20XBg6fal8dMOymw_c_CBEQMRuYxxBE9C5tvQayTtXaUT_6lljlQ16G5Qf7lrSrwbPE5ymhD4mF5JTC8T7wyqC7kCvqKg-Vrx02YWZPHSVeIuXesO7XdSYLWEHxsXtYsIbkkpFd3UTmvuvHvYrrEiqcGXA=s320" width="320" /></a></div>- you can always make a smaller quilt! Small wall quilts can be very impactful.<div><br /></div><div>These are just a couple of collaboration myths you might encounter. Karen is addressing different myths on her blog today. What a year! While it would be easy to focus on all of the crazy negative things going on in the world right now (no, I'm not going to list them. you already know!) I'm choosing to focus on the positive. And there sure was a lot of it in my world this year. Here are the highlights.... so I never forget how blessed I was in 2021.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgJbQK8dnVA4SLyYzyiCrrdDSQ4tdccIUjwixy33qvLPK-6H569zWfZzyzhi_bNgIAuL6UJosz65dmlJL7fTYZjVhoPRwKEe_1_jlh_NViKvZcaihLCzb20PtLQFo51V135DAkv7lHzZ-X8DgshXecxjRhAKSwEgs7o5kqK09Gg46obIpj6hGZxOOgAFg=s2048" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgJbQK8dnVA4SLyYzyiCrrdDSQ4tdccIUjwixy33qvLPK-6H569zWfZzyzhi_bNgIAuL6UJosz65dmlJL7fTYZjVhoPRwKEe_1_jlh_NViKvZcaihLCzb20PtLQFo51V135DAkv7lHzZ-X8DgshXecxjRhAKSwEgs7o5kqK09Gg46obIpj6hGZxOOgAFg=s320" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Urban Emergence</td></tr></tbody></table><br />In February, my group quilt,<a href="https://ellynsplace.blogspot.com/2020/06/urban-emergence.html"> Urban Emergence</a> was part of Quiltcon Together, the virtual MQG show that replaced in person Quiltcon this year. It was my very first quilt accepted into Quiltcon. Imagine my surprise when<a href="https://ellynsplace.blogspot.com/2021/02/quiltcon-together-awards-ceremony.html"> I won first place in my category!</a> As if this wasn't enough, it was chosen for publication in the Quiltcon magazine! What an honor!<div><br /></div><div>Later that month, <a href="https://www.sarahgoerquilts.com">Sarah Goer</a> and I formed a <a href="https://ellynsplace.blogspot.com/2021/06/in-tandem-art.html">pARTnership</a>, inspired by Danielle Krysa's In </div><div>tandem Art project. Sarah and I have continued to meet on Zoom every two weeks all year long, encouraging each other in our artistic journeys. One of the greatest things to come out of our friendship is the start of our new improv bee, <a href="https://ellynsplace.blogspot.com/search/label/quilts%20unscripted">Quilts Unscripted.</a> This group is incredibly talented and inspiring! </div><div><br /></div><div>Again in 2021, I was able to participate in the Virtual Quilt Guild where I met so many amazing quilters. One relationship that came out of that group is my collaboration with <a href="https://www.karenbolan.com">Karen Bolan</a>. Karen and I have also been meeting often on Zoom and have shared a collaborative quilt project (<a href="https://ellynsplace.blogspot.com/search?q=welcoming+lamp">Welcoming Lamp</a>), a series of blog posts (<a href="https://ellynsplace.blogspot.com/search?q=exploring+collaboration">Exploring Collaboration</a>) and coming soon..... a published article on Collaboration in <a href="https://curatedquilts.com">Curated Quilts </a>magazine! When I set out on a six month personal journey to create a cohesive body of work and explore my creative voice it seemed daunting at best. The more I worked through it, the more joyful it became.
